Legendary gospel singer, Solly Moholo dies aged 65

Veteran South African gospel artist, Solomon Molokoane, affectionately known as Solly Moholo, has passed away at the age of 65, as confirmed by his management.

The award-winning gospel icon had been hospitalized for several weeks after falling ill during a music tour in Botswana last month.

Rising to prominence in the early 2000s, Moholo became a beloved figure in South Africa's traditional gospel scene. His management fondly remembered him for the “healing power of his music,” which touched countless lives over the years.

Last month, it was revealed that Moholo had suffered a stroke and was battling multiple organ failure. His family made a public appeal for financial support to assist with his medical expenses.

"It is with deep sorrow that we share the news, on behalf of the Molokoane family, of Solly Moholo's passing," his management announced. "He passed away on October 2, 2024, while in hospital."

Moholo was celebrated for hits like Die poppe sal dans, Ka letsatsi labofelo, and Tsoha Jonase, among many others. Fellow gospel artists, fans, and friends have been paying heartfelt tributes across social media.

"He left an unforgettable legacy in the gospel music industry, known for his soulful voice and energetic live performances," noted the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The African National Congress (ANC) hailed Moholo as a true musical icon. "His powerful voice, his passion for spreading the gospel, and his dedication to uplifting spirits through his music will always be cherished," said ANC Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula.

"You will forever live in the hearts of South Africans, Ntate," the South African government shared.

The family has kindly requested privacy during this time of mourning as they make preparations for his final farewell.
